Our homes have very little inbuilt technology. Our cars lock themselves. Why can't a house have central locking and electric windows? Why can't we control the oven from our iPhones or connect to the webcam in the store cupboard or fridge to check we've still got some ketchup? Every Ideal Home show since the 1950s has featured a "House of the Future" but we don't seem much closer.
I've just found a gadget that moves me a little way closer to my domestic panacea. Check out the Nest Internet Connected Home Thermostat, an incredible gadget created by a former Apple engineer to simply let you monitor and control your heating from anywhere. It also learns the way you use your heating to save you a few extra pounds. I can't wait to get one - the only snag is that they're not available yet - even in their native USA. Back to the Future!
